Do you ever sit at home, thinking of the adventures you could be having? Kicking up dust as you race down rocky mountain roads. The thrill of driving through rivers, traversing steep embankments, and becoming one with your vehicle as you search for the perfect camping spot.

These adventures don’t have to be a daydream any longer!

With a few simple modifications, you can transform your new Subaru into an off-road Subaru and claim your title as King of the Dirt Road.

A New World Awaits

Your Subaru is already a powerhouse. It has all-wheel drive, can adapt to multiple types of terrain, and has a robust design that can handle more than just city streets. These features lay a great foundation for you to transform your sleek urban ride into an edgy off-road beast.

Here are a few modifications you can make to own the dirt roads.

Tread Lightly

One of the most important decisions when transforming your Subaru into an off-road king is choosing the right tires. Obviously, you want tires with added grip, puncture resistance, and wet weather capability. Crucially, you’ll also want them to be as lightweight as possible.

Lightweight tires provide a more comfortable ride on rough terrain and put less strain on your transmission. The lighter your tires, the less draw on your horsepower, braking ability, and fuel efficiency.

Look for tires designed specifically for crossover vehicles. Crossover tires maintain wet weather traction and off-road durability while remaining lightweight. This allows you to save on weight without sacrificing performance.

Accessories

Ground clearance is often a limiting factor for off-road vehicles. A lift kit solves this problem. Lift kits allow for the installation of larger tires and raise the suspension, boosting ground clearance.

Many kits also include an upgrade to heavy-duty suspension and bushings, increasing the strength and durability of these fittings. Some models, like the Subaru Forester, may not need a lift kit, as it already has 8.7 inches of ground clearance.

When driving on rocky terrain, a skid plate is a must. No matter your ground clearance, it’s only a matter of time before a rogue rock or boulder hits the belly of your car. A skid plate helps protect your radiator and other engine parts from damage.

Roof racks offer great storage and provide a convenient way to transport bikes and kayaks. Subaru has a wide range of roof racks available for all models, including the Subaru Outback and the Subaru Crosstrek.

If possible, opt for an aluminum model as it won’t rust and is more lightweight. Roof racks cause a lot of drag and greatly impact your fuel economy. Look for roof racks that can be easily removed when not in use.
